Peterborough Highway Contract let

Skanska has signed a contract from Peterborough City Council to maintain the city’s highways, light the streets and clean its drains worth a potential £75 million over ten years.

Atkins had previously been selected after a tendering process for the Highway Services deal but sold its highways operations and maintenance business to Skanska earlier this year.

The Council hopes to save £7½ million from the new contract which starts on 1 October, replacing four contracts with separate contractors, and has an option to extend the contract for another ten years.

Simon Machan, Head of Planning, Transport and Engineering for Peterborough City Council commented: ‘Skanska was the candidate which stood out to take this brand new contract in terms of quality and the price for which it could provide this service. This is a long-term partnership between the Council and Skanska which will deliver essential services such as pothole repairs and traffic light maintenance.

‘We are now working with Skanska to ensure a seamless transfer of operations between the existing contracts and the new contract, which will start on October 1st.’

Skanska already operates five similar contracts nationally including one for neighbouring Cambridgeshire County Council. Skanska’s President, Mike Putnam, said: ‘We are working with Peterborough City Council to create local job opportunities and provide excellent customer service.’
