The STFC RAL Space Department Millimetre-wave Technology Group (MMTG) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary and world-leading technical team that undertakes a broad remit of project work associated with the development of millimetre and submillimetre-wave (terahertz frequency) devices and instrumentation used in ground-based, airborne and spaceborne remote sounding. In a major expansion of its already broad portfolio of work, the MMTG is pursuing a very substantial technical development and supply activity in support of the MetOp Second Generation (MetOp-SG) series of Earth observation satellites. MetOp-SG will deliver complex multi-wavelength instrument payloads into low Earth orbit via a series of repeat satellite deployments to be initiated in 2021. Each satellite will monitor the Earth’s climate and weather within a range of well-defined wavelengths and a sequenced launch approach will ensure operational continuity of European meteorological forecasting through to 2050.

In support of the above, the MMTG is leading a European consortium tasked with providing sensitive, space-compliant and state-of-the-art millimetre-wave receiver front-ends that form the critical MetOp-SG Microwave Sounder (MWS), Microwave Imager (MWI) and Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) sub-payloads. To support our programme of work we are seeking an experienced RF Systems/Test Engineer who will support the design and test activities associated with the development of multiple complex systems destined for use in space.

A suitable candidate will be expected to be able to demonstrate a career profile that includes demonstrated areas of expertise gained through work within the RF/microwave engineering field, preferably including work in the aerospace sector. The candidate will be expected to report to project technical and administrative management as required and to make judgement calls regarding design approaches and techniques. Thus, an attention to detail and high level of communication and documentation skills are required for this role, which is pivotal in ensuring the delivery of state-of-the-art technology to project related RAL Space customers and a fleet of future Earth observing satellites.

The main activities that the successful candidate will be expected to perform are as follows:

• Interpreting customer system-level requirements specifications to derive component-level requirements

• Design of components and subsystems at frequencies ranging from RF (?1GHz) to millimetre-wave (?100GHz)

• Integrating and testing prototype and breadboard receivers in the microwave laboratory

• Integrating and testing flight receivers to the required flight standards, working in ESD-controlled cleanroom conditions

• Providing detailed feedback to colleagues in the RAL design team as well as preparing inputs to documentation and reports for presentation to the customer(s) at project reviews

• Identifying and recommending possible improvements in efficiency or quality at any stage of the integration and test procedures

The position requires, as a minimum, the following demonstrable qualifications, skills and prior experience:

Essential

• First degree or equivalent in Electronics, Physics, Communications Technology or a related subject..

• Good computer and application skills

• Good attention to detail

• Good organisational abilities

• Fluent English spoken and written

• Able to deliver at speed

Desirable

• Professional qualifications (e.g. MIET, CEng)

• Proficiency in the use of ADS and HFSS design tools

Essential

• A minimum of five years experience in RF, microwave or millimetre-wave design at components and/or instrument level

• Prior experience in assembly, integration & test of microwave instrumentation

• Extensive experience in the use of microwave test equipment

• Experience in data preparation and presentation

Desirable

• Experience of space flight hardware development or space qualification

• Prior experience in assembly, integration & test of millimetre wave components

• Experience of working in a cleanroom

• Familiarity with Product Assurance requirements

• Experience in the use of data manipulation and visualization packages e.g. IDL, Matlab

• Experience with programming or using test instrumentation using Labview
