DESCRIPTION:

As the Open Standards Lead for GDS, you will work in a collaboratively within GDS and across government, to lead the development and delivery of GDS-led policy.

As part of the role you will:

Manage relationships with senior leaders and Ministers on behalf of GDS

Responsible for input into Technology Policy, including Open Standards Principles

Responsible for ensuring Open Standards are embedded and mandated across government

Maintain the list of adopted standards selected by the Open Standards Board

Act as the government representative for Open Standards, promoting use across departments, developing a communications strategy and engagement plan with a view to driving up Open Standards adoption.

Represent the U.K Government in Standards Development Organisations (e.g Unicode Consortium, and W3C)

Own the Open Standards Principles and utilize existing processes which outline how open standards are assessed

Lead on cross government engagement and working out a communications strategy and engagement plan so to help promote Open Standards

Be an ambassador for Open Standards, engaging with cross government stakeholders via a communications strategy and engagement plan

Promote the use of Open Standards across government through conference attendance, and technology panel interviews

Some international travel may be required.

Main responsibilities

In this role you will:

• Set and deliver strategy on open standards for the whole of the UK government

• Identify the highest impact work across government to make the UK a world leader in open standards

• influence senior leaders across government to support delivery of strategy through public speaking, peer support, documentation and blogging

• build an awareness of UK Government Open Standards externally and increase overall involvement in the Open Standards community

Skills and experience

At GDS we’re looking for people with strong interpersonal skills who enjoy working in a delivery focused, agile environment. We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic about technology and have a proven track record in project management.

For this role it is essential that you have:

• Passion and ability to advocate for Open Standards and interoperability

• Experience of thought leadership, setting product vision and influencing senior leaders

• demonstrable knowledge of the Government’s priorities in Digital and Technology

• Ability to communicate with impact

• Experience building and managing teams

Minimum Requirement:

1 - On a monthly basis review and work on standards to be presented to the Open Standards Board, taking the Board’s steer on prioritisation.

2 - On a monthly basis promote the use of Open Standards in accordance with the Open Standards Principles, by engaging with Central and non-Ministerial Departments, as well as public sector bodies, and giving presentations on the virtues of Open Standards.

3 - On a monthly basis help to build and facilitate an Open Standards Community of Practice across central government.

4 - Work alongside product and department leadership to integrate open source goals with GDS and cross government departments. Including showing how Open Source practices can shape the way that we work.

5 - Ensure that the right tools and public fora is available in order to help enable GDS and Cross government teams to release their code and share it with others.

6 - Work with open standard organisations on a monthly basis contributing to the good management and sustainable ability of the standard.
